VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Pride Parade will not be like the Toronto Pride Parade.
The Black Lives Matters movement will lead the Dyke March on July 30th.
Cicely Belle Blain with Black Lives Matter says they jumped at the opportunity to be involved in this grassroots movement.
“It’s really great that we’ve been asked by the Vancouver Dyke March folks to allow us to be at the front of their parade and have that space,” says Blain.
“We’re going t go there wearing our Black Lives Matter T-shirts and have a visibility for people who are black and queer and that’s really important to us.”
Blain says many of the Pride events have become whitewashed, only representing white men.
“We really need to acknowledge the importance of centring black voices in the queer community because I think that’s something we’ve really been lacking. We really would appreciate queer communities in Vancouver having more of a focus on people of colour.”
Blain believes black voices in the queer community will help the movement get back to its roots.
