60 second HIV test could soon be a take-home kit

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Prince Harry took an HIV test during the week to reduce the stigma for getting checked, and there’s a local connection.

Between getting the prick to his finger and checking the results, the whole process took about four minutes for Prince Harry.

The tool used on him is called the 60 second INSTI, developed by Richmond-based bioLytical Laboratories.

“The importance of this is that since we’re the world’s fastest HIV test, we’re also extremely accurate and it’s in line with Prince Harry’s goals of trying to help and make sure everybody’s screened appropriately on a global basis,” says the company’s chief commercial officer Stan Miele.

“It’s greater than 99 percent sensitive as well as 99 percent specific as well in terms of picking up the HIV virus.”

Miele says the company eventually plans to release a take-home version of the test.
