Relatively wet summer weather could have an impact on your commute

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s not quite a tragedy by Shakespearian standards, but for sun lovers and beach-goers, this is the summer of our discontent in Metro Vancouver. And it turns out our dreary July could also impact your commute!

We’ve had more wet days than dry ones so far this month, and it turns out the lack of sunshine can cause complications for paving crews.

There are certain jobs that can be done in this weather, but Nick Sastorelli with Grandview Blacktop Paving says others have to be put off.

“There’s a lot of things that are going on. It doesn’t really affect the schedule, but because our season is much shorter, there’s only so many days left to do final paving,” he explains.

“In the summer, if we say from June to end of September, if we get 15 rain days, it could start putting some pressure on us.”

The season ends for crews when the weather gets really bad in the fall.

“Right now, it’s not an issue. But as we enter into mid-October, decisions need to be made. As long as the roads get their base lift of asphalt in, we can leave the top lift for this coming spring. And typically, that’s what happens. If we run out of weather in say, middle of November, the important thing is to get the base lift in,” says Sastorelli.

He adds there are generally a few days in November when the temperatures are relatively mild, so projects can be finished on time.
