Decision coming soon for proposed Grandview-Woodland community plan

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We may soon know how one of the most vibrant areas of Vancouver will be changing over the next three decades. A decision could be coming this week on a proposed plan for Grandview-Woodland.

There are a couple of running themes throughout the plan: increasing affordable housing while maintaining the character of each part of the neighbourhood.

The plan puts an emphasis on more affordable housing options for families, renters, seniors, and young workers.

Assistant Director of Planning for the City, Kent Munro says more than 7,000 new homes are envisioned over the thirty years. ” About 1,400 of them are estimated to be new and additional rental housing, and 1,400 of them are non-market or social housing,” he explains.

Munro says the look and vibe of much of Commercial Drive wouldn’t change.

But big changes are envisioned for the area around the Skytrain Station at Commercial and Broadway — including a renewed plaza where the Safeway is.

“So that the future growth and change in the area will give new people an opportunity to live in a great neighbourhood and live close to transit.”

The plaza would include housing and businesses in buildings up to 24 storeys. Council will hear about the plan on Tuesday, and listen to speakers on Wednesday.
