‘Something trivial escalated quickly:’ VPD on the city’s latest homicide

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We are learning more about an assault outside the Caprice Nightclub in Downtown Vancouver yesterday morning that left one woman dead.

Police are still trying to nail down the exact motive but say there was a fight in the club over something trivial and that things escalated very quickly after that. The actual attack happened just outside the club. Two women were said to be attacking a 28-year-old woman who was then rushed to the hospital and died last night.

Investigators say the staff and bouncers at the club stepped in to stop what was happening, but it was too late. “They were very disturbed by what they saw and they did do the right thing. There were lots of people in the area, but in speaking with a representative of the nightclub, their door staff are very traumatized as well,” explains VPD Constable Brian Montague.

The pair believed to be responsible were arrested soon after and released pending further investigation and autopsy results, but Montague is confident charges will be approved soon. “There are too many witnesses. There are lots of cameras. There is plenty of evidence for us to go on that in virtually every case that I can think of — of a violent incident on the Granville Mall — has been solved.”

He adds the suspects and the victim did not know each other. “I think those who witnessed it are very disturbed by what they saw. From time to time we see this. We’re hoping to share some information to let people know that when these things happen: we will identify you, we will catch you, we will hold you accountable, and you will find yourself in either criminal or civil court or both.”

The two women believed to be responsible are 25 and 29-years-old. One is from Vancouver, the other is from another city in the province that’s outside the Lower Mainland.

Police have some surveillance footage but are still canvassing for more. Anyone with information about this case or who saw the assault and hasn’t spoken to police is asked to the call the VPD‘s Homicide Unit at 604.717.2500 or CrimeStoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS (8477).
