Brag-worthy BC winter forecast

(VANCOUVER) NEWS 1130 – Let the bragging begin! Social media users are seeing their pages blanketed with Canadian snowfall pictures while Vancouverites continue to boast a green, albeit rainy, autumn.

Some forecasters, like the Farmers’ Almanac, are predicting the upcoming winter season will be a reason for the rest of the country to be a bit jealous of British Columbians.

While most of Canada could be in for frigid and snowy weather, BC could see a stormy but mild winter.

Christopher Nicolson, president & CEO of Canada West Ski Areas Association, says there is a lot of optimism in the winter sports industry.

“You’ve already seen that. Last week, anyone with social media was being bombarded by snow photos up on the mountains, and another barometer on that is, I would hazard a guess, that retail sales are probably quite brisk right now.”

Stormy forecasts for southern BC could mean a good amount of snow for outdoor sports.

“All the ski areas that we work with plan conservatively, and if it’s a bumper crop, than all the better.”

Nicolson says, if 2016-2017 is a repeat of last winter, BC could once again see an influx of skiers and snowboarders at local resorts.

“Last year ski hills saw big visitation, not just from Eastern Canada, also from the US. Other factors like the dollar and so forth propel that, but snow is a big motivator for people.”
