Storm prompts early opening of extreme weather shelters

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With storms starting early for the season, the province moved up the opening of extreme weather response shelters.

The shelters in Metro Vancouver and across the province provided extra space for people who are homeless so they can escape the cold, rainy conditions.

The province says it made more than 1,700 shelter spaces available in 80 communities last winter in addition to the 1,900 spaces that are open year-round.

The winter shelters typically open November 1st, but with storms hitting the south coast, doors opened last Wednesday.
