Crash course aims to teach teachers how to bring computer coding into the classroom

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – Computer coding is a part of the new K to 12 curriculum now being taught across the province. So how do you teach first graders programming?
There’s a free workshop happening in Port Coquitlam today, where teachers are learning that they don’t really have to.
At the heart of all things technological is a concept called computational thinking. That might sound complicated, but it’s something we do all the time.
“How do we solve problems? How do we break things down and compute a solution to a problem?” asks Don Burks, head instructor at Lighthouse Labs.
Burks helped develop this one-day crash course.
He says once teachers are familiar with the basic concepts, they can start looking for ways to bring code into the classroom.
“Let’s show you what’s possible, let’s show you how to think about this and frame this in a way that’s now going to be more accessible to everyone.”
Six more of these teacher workshops are planned across the province over the next three months.
