Former Vancouverite in New Zealand recalls Christchurch quake

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (NEWS 1130) – People in New Zealand are dealing with the aftermath of yesterday’s magnitude-7.8 earthquake.

The quake killed two people and caused major damage across the South Island, destroying roads and buildings.

Helicopters are being dispatched to help areas that have been cut off by damaged roads and railways.

About 1,000 tourists are stranded in the coastal town of Kaikoura and rescue plans are being made.

A former Vancouverite living in New Zealand, Scott Bovaird, was in Christchurch when it hit, and remembers the moments right after.

“People were definitely very nervous out there. It was a very long and rolling quake. I suppose a lot of people who live in Christchurch though this was ramping up to be another big one, similar to the ones in 2011,” says Bovaird.

He says it’s heartwarming to see the community coming together.

“There’s definitely a sense of comradery out there though. Lots of people checking on each other, making sure everyone’s okay. Obviously just checking on everyone’s mental well-being as well.”

The earthquake also triggered a small tsunami.
