Family takes stand on day two of Calgary Liknes-O’Brien trial

CALGARY (NEWS 1130) – Another day of family members on the stand in the Douglas Garland murder trial in Calgary, with the father, mother, and sister of the accused taking the stand.

Garland, 56, faces three first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Alvin and Kathy Liknes and their five-year-old grandson Nathan O’Brien after they disappeared in June of 2014.

His loved ones discussed their relationship with him and what was going on around the time of the disappearance two and a half years ago.

Garland’s father, Archie, says he and his son talked about the fallout from Douglas’ work relationship with the Liknes on a pump they were constructing. Douglas was upset about not getting paid Archie says, adding he told him it’s a bump in the road and this is life.

Meanwhile, Doreen Garland testified that you could say her son was a bit of a loner, with not many friends, but never showed any violence.

She also said he never wanted to talk about the Liknes including when she first saw news of the amber alert.

It turns out the accused’s sister, Patti, played a key role in his arrest. After seeing a news report of the truck police were looking for, she took pictures of Garland’s truck to be sent to police while visiting his home.

The trial continues tomorrow.
