BC Federation of Labour supports Vancouver anti-Trump women’s rights rally

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Federation of Labour is throwing its support behind an anti-Donald Trump rally set to take to the streets of downtown Vancouver this Saturday.
The Vancouver rally is one of more than 600 that will take place around the world in solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington, a women’s rights movement which sprang to life following Trump’s election.
The march is scheduled for the day after Trump’s official inauguration ceremony.
“We’re worried about the rise of a right-wing leader, Donald Trump, who in the statements that he’s made, does not support our fundamental values,” BCFED president Irene Lanzinger says. “Those are values of diversity, supporting everyone, of being inclusive, having a welcoming attitude towards immigrants and respecting women.”
Even though they are protesting a foreign leader, Lanzinger says the Canadian protests are not just about the president elect.
“Every country has groups of people who say things that are similar to what he’s saying so I think our message is we are going to fight back against those kinds of attitudes,” she says.
Thousands of people have responded to the Vancouver rally’s Facebook event page. The march begins at 10 a.m. at Jack Poole Plaza and will end beneath the newly unveiled signs at Trump Tower on West Georgia Street.
