Rick Hansen speaks about several accessibility projects in BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you live with a disability, you’ve probably been frustrated by accessibility problems.

Thanks to the “Man in Motion,” several projects have been approved across the country to make sure everyone is able to live without unnecessary challenges.

The first 15 Barrier Buster projects have been approved, each set to get up to 30-thousand dollars through the Rick Hansen Foundation, funded in part by the federal government.

A project could be something as simple as adding a ramp to a building or making a playground accessible to ALL kids.

“We have to consider the universal and inclusive design and formalize our lens by how we view accessibility so we don’t miss it and then have to go back and then retrofit again, we need to get in front of it,” says Rick Hansen. “Disability affects 4-million Canadians, 1.1 billion people on the planet, aging baby boomers are having disabling conditions, and we have to consider universal and inclusive design.”

Five of the projects chosen so far are here in BC. Ultimately, fifty grants will be given out.
