ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – An Abbotsford Police officer is recovering after apparently being sucker-punched Thursday night.
The assault happened around 8 p.m. after police responded to a call about a suspicious person at a barn on Interprovincial Highway.
Constable Ian MacDonald with Abbotsford Police says the suspect gave a false name but didn’t seem threatening.
“Until he sucker-punched our police officer and made a run for it through various farm properties. For us it commenced a bit of a man-hunt. We deployed patrol and canine resources along with ERT officers.”
MacDonald says the 46-year-old suspect from Surrey has an extensive criminal record and was eventually caught, but resisted arrest throughout.
“At one point during a foot-chase he grabbed and brandished a piece of iron and started swinging it around. Ultimately, we had to bring him into custody using OC or pepper spray.”
Charges of assaulting a police officer, break and enter and possessing stolen property are being recommended.
