Sharks handle shorthanded Canucks at Rogers Arena

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – All things considered, the Vancouver Canucks handled themselves pretty well against the division rival San Jose Sharks on Saturday night at Rogers Arena.

It was close for two and a half periods, but Mikkel Boedker and Logan Couture added insurance for the Sharks in the third period on the way to a 4-1 San Jose win.

Vancouver was really up against it before this game, as it was announced on Friday that a case of the mumps was making its way through the team. Three regular defensemen — Chris Tanev, Troy Stecher, and Nikita Tryamkin — did not play.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Luca Sbisa left the game in the third period and did not return — the team saying it was the stomach flu, but it’s easy to speculate at this point if it’s related to the mumps.

Patrick Marleau scored the eventual game-winning goal with under a minute to go in the second period, jamming a rebound past Ryan Miller right at the edge of the crease.
The goal was Marleau’s 22nd of the season.

That gave the Sharks some momentum after Daniel Sedin tied the game at one earlier in the frame. The Canucks were able to force a Brent Burns turnover, and Sedin snapped a shot past Martin Jones for his 13th of the year.

Tomas Hertl scored the other goal for the Sharks.

Evan McEneny made his NHL debut on the blueline for Vancouver in this game, while Joe Labate and Alex Grenier made appearances up front for Vancouver.

The Canucks outshot the Sharks 36-26 on this night.

Vancouver is still nine points out of the second wild card spot in the western conference with 21 games remaining.

Next action for the Canucks is Tuesday night at Rogers Arena against the Detroit Red Wings.
