TransLink considers tap feature for transit fares

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It may soon be even easier to pay to take transit in Metro Vancouver.

You might soon be able to use your credit card or phone just like your compass card when you want to hop on the bus, SkyTrain or Canada Line. TransLink is conducting public surveys to find out if this is something people in Vancouver want.

Chris Bryan with the company says it would make paying a lot easier.

“You just walk up to the fare gates, tap your credit card, debit card or perhaps your Apple pay on your phone and then you can go on your way.”

Compass card users would still get the better deals on passes, but TransLink says the tap feature would be great for tourists and casual users.

“Frequent users’ Compass Cards will always be the best option because you’ll always get the best rate but for somebody who just is using transit occasionally or for someone who is visiting the city for a brief time this is just another convenience.”

Bryan says because buses and trains already use a tap system, it wouldn’t take long or cost very much to add credit cards and cell phones.
