Traffic, hospital key issues for Richmond voters

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Anyone who lives or drives through Richmond knows that traffic is an issue, especially in the top and bottom parts of the city.

“(There are) major traffic jams on the Oak St Bridge and at Steveston Highway during rush hour,” says Graeme Wood with the Richmond News.

With the election just over two weeks away, Wood says the bridge replacing the ageing Massey Tunnel is looming as the biggest issue for people in Richmond.

“I think the concerns are two-fold. I think there’s the cost and the tolls that could be hitting Richmond residents, as well as the environmental factors at play. I don’t think the environmental factors are as publicized.”

Another concern is how traffic could be pushed from where the tunnel is now, to the Oak St bridge.

Wood says while the Massey Tunnel replacement bridge is front and centre, another local issue is gaining steam.

“Richmond Hospital has a north tower that’s seismically unsafe, it’s unsteady.”

“The NDP claims the Liberals have ignored the issue for at least a decade I think both parties now are playing to the public, making promises this tower will be built as soon as possible.”

British Columbians go to the polls on May 9th.
