Tories target Trudeau over inflated claims by defence minister

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – The official federal opposition is trying to pin a controversy surrounding the federal defence minister on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Minister Harjit Sajjan has faced much criticism after falsely claiming he was the architect of Operation Medusa, a major campaign during the war in Afghanistan.

The Conservatives are slightly shifting the focus of their attacks over this controversy, as they call for the defence minister to resign or be fired. “Failing Canadians — apparently is no firing offence in this Liberal cabinet. Justin Trudeau continues to stand by his defence minister,” says Conservative Party Interim Leader Rona Ambrose.

She is trying to pin this on the PM, saying he needs to take action, claiming the troops have lost faith in the minister. “This exaggeration is an insult to the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces.”

Minister Sajjan did play a role in Operation Medusa and has apologized for his claim on several occasions.

The prime minister stood up in the House of Commons earlier this week to say he has confidence in Sajjan, reiterating he has apologized and Trudeau considers the matter closed.
