Three people hit by car near Granville Island, impaired driving a factor

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An elderly man is one of three people recovering after being hit by a car at the entrance of Granville Island on Sunday evening. Vancouver Police confirm the driver, a 21-year-old from Surrey, is not in custody but is being investigated for impaired driving.

The crash happened at around 5:30 p.m. in the area of Anderson Street and West 4th Avenue. Investigators say the trio was crossing on a green light when a blue Mazda ran a red light and hit them. The 87-year-old man and two 14-year-old boys were in a marked crosswalk. Two of the victims don’t have serious injuries, however, the elderly man is in the hospital in serious but stable condition.

Constable Jason Doucette says charges won’t likely be approved anytime soon against the driver. “Not only here do you have an alleged impaired driver but you also have a collision investigation, so there’s actually two separate things happening here and these will take a bit longer.”

This latest incident is expected to raise some safety concerns surrounding the popular tourist destination. Last July, a 23-year-old international student was killed when a SUV hit three pedestrians on the island. The driver involved in that crash stuck around and was cooperating with police.

And back in 2009 a 31-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were killed when the pair was hit by a car in a marked crosswalk on West 4th Avenue. A teen was charged and eventually sentenced to five years behind bars for impaired driving causing death, among other offences in that case.
