Woman from Castlegar among those killed in London terror attacks

CASTLEGAR (NEWS 1130) – The Canadian killed in the London terror attacks has been named as Christine Archibald, from Castlegar.

The community is now coming to grips with the news. “I could tell you the community is going to come together and it’s going to help the family in any which way they humanly possibly can. And I can tell you whenever there’s a need in the community or a family needs support, the community is 100 per cent and they’ll do absolutely everything they need to do to help the family,” says Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff. “Now we’re connected to a terrorist act in the world and that’s something you don’t really want to have, but it’s something that’s put on our lap.”

In a statement, her family said:

“We grieve the loss of our beautiful, loving daughter and sister. She had room in her heart for everyone and believed strongly that every person was to be valued and respected.  She lived this belief working in a shelter for the homeless until she moved to Europe to be with her fiancé. She would have had no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death. Please honour her by making your community a better place. Volunteer your time and labor or donate to a homeless shelter. Tell them Chrissy sent you.”

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, released a statement as well.

“Canada strongly condemns the senseless attack that took place last night in London, United Kingdom, which killed and injured many innocent people. I am heartbroken that a Canadian is among those killed.

We grieve with the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones, and wish all those injured a speedy and full recovery.

Londoners and people across the United Kingdom have always displayed strength and resilience in the face of adversity. We recently witnessed this after the attacks in Manchester and in the Westminster area of London. This time will be no different.

These hateful acts do not deter us; they only strengthen our resolve. Canadians stand united with the British people. We will continue to work together with the United Kingdom and all our allies to fight terrorism and bring perpetrators to justice.”

Consular services are being provided to the family and friends of the victim, in Canada and in the United Kingdom.

The attack began at about 10 p.m. local time on Saturday when police and witnesses say a white van barrelled into pedestrians on the London Bridge.

The Canadian government is advising citizens to be vigilant in wake of the attack.
