Man arrested over transit sexual assault ‘very well known’ to police

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – Police have arrested the man they believe sexually assaulted a woman and tried to grab her daughter at 22nd Street Station in February.

Police say 47-year-old Stephen Silvester is very well known to them and has been remanded in custody.

Police allege a woman was standing on the platform at 22nd Street SkyTrain station on February 24th when she was grabbed and kissed by Silvester. She pushed him away and left to pick up her daughter.

When she returned to the station 20 minutes later, Silvester boarded the same bus and sat beside her. Police say as she attempted get off the bus, Silvester tried to grab her daughter’s leg.

Silvester was arrested at the SeaBus south terminal Tuesday morning, when Transit Police responded to reports of him yelling and waving a stick. Officers were able to identify him as the sexual assault suspect. Silvester was taken into custody after a Transit Police negotiator encouraged him to leave a restricted area.

Silvester will appear in court on June 15.
