Fire damages home in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Crews in Surrey made quick work of a fire that gutted a home in Newton early this morning.

Battalion Chief Brian Carmichael says flames could be seen shooting from the home when they arrived on 132nd Street and 80th avenue around 3:30 a.m.

“The house was fully involved on the second floor, with flames out the front and the rear of the building,” says Carmichael. “The crews made an offensive attack, knocked the fire down… then took care of the hot-spots.”

While there was no one listed to be living inside, mattresses and makeshift beds were found inside the building, an indication people were staying inside illegally.

This isn’t the first time crews have had to put out a blaze at the exact same address.

The neighbouring family did have time to get out of their home safely.

At this point, the fire is being considered suspicious.
