Hurricane Harvey could drive up Canadian gas prices

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Hurricane Harvey could have an impact up here, in terms of what you pay at the pump.

It all comes down to how much the storm affects refineries down in Texas, according to Dan McTeague with GasBuddy.com.

“Generally speaking, refineries are built in that region to withstand hurricane-force winds. But it’s the flooding that could create problems, especially when you consider that a refinery needs to ensure that its pumps are working.”

“It will have an impact, and it’s already being felt by a number of refineries in the Corpus Christi area, which is only a handful of the total refineries on the US Gulf Coast, all of whom represent better than half of the US gasoline production,” adds McTeague.

Gas prices spiked by around 12 cents in this country following Hurricane Ike back in 2008.
