Two boys could be charged after Coquitlam school vandalized

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – Mounties say a  couple of 13-year-old boys, both from Coquitlam, could be charged after extensive damage was done to Montgomery Middle School on September 17th.

Investigators say at about 8 p.m., police were called to the school on Edgewood Avenue where they found things like smashed windows, damaged computer equipment, a broken vending machine, and missing fire extinguishers.

“With the help of witnesses, police interviews, RCMP Police Dog Services, and other investigative techniques we were able to identify two suspects,” explains Corporal Michael McLaughlin. “The estimated damage to the school is over $10,000 and that doesn’t factor in the inconvenience to everyone who uses the school. We want students and parents to know that we appreciate their passion and we took their concerns seriously.”

It’s unclear how long the pair were in the school. “I can’t say how long the suspects were in the school but I can say the damage was extensive. They had to be in there for at least a little while. There were dozens and dozens of broken windows, smashed computer equipment and it was over multiple floors, so it took a while to do the amount of damage that happened in this file.”

Potential charges that may be recommended will be mischief and break and enter and police say it’s possible charges won’t be approved at all and that Crown Counsel may come up with “alternative measures.”

Both suspects are too young to be named.
