‘Lights of Hope’ shine on at St. Paul’s Hospital

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you find yourself in downtown Vancouver near St. Paul’s Hospital one of these evenings, get ready to be wowed.
The 20th annual Lights of Hope fundraising campaign has kicked off, with 100,000 bulbs making the building glow in a breathtaking display that will be around through the holiday season.
Dick Vollet, president of the St. Paul’s Foundation, says over the past two decades, the campaign has raised more than $31 million.
“All of the money goes into helping patient care at St. Paul’s — everything from the emergency department all the way through to the cardiac programs, the respiratory programs, renal programs, mental health and addictions.”
“With the opioid addiction crisis in front of us, gripping this province and this country, the emergency department is on the coalface of that. And our team, the BC Centre on Substance Use, gets a big benefit from Lights of Hope,” adds Vollet.
He adds they use LED lights and BCIT students wire them at the hospital, under the supervision of BC Hydro.
“It becomes a training exercise. So, we’re not only a research and teaching hospital, we’re taking it one step further into teaching electrical trades, as well,” he chuckles.
