Fundraiser for diabetes research tonight in Pitt Meadows

PITT MEADOWS (NEWS 1130) – Body slams and suplexes could help raise some money for charity tonight, at a unique fundraiser in Pitt Meadows. Some pro wrestlers are putting on a show to benefit a summer camp for kids with Type 1 diabetes.

Tonight’s show — put on by Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling — is raising money for Camp Kakhamela on the Sunshine Coast.

Eleven-year-old William Veroni is one of the campers already looking forward to summer. “Everybody surrounded by other people with diabetes and all the doctors are there so it kind of gives you a break, even though you have diabetes, it still gives you a break because you don’t have to think about it that much.”

He says it’s nice to be around other people who are dealing with the same chronic disease. “You meet all these different people that have had diabetes maybe longer or just got diagnosed and it’s really interesting.”

Veroni adds having the condition can teach someone a lot about themselves. “Ignore the fact that people can sometimes make fun of you and to just know that you’re going to have to live with this but always be cool about it.”

Considering someone could be swinging a steel chair tonight, Diabetes Canada says this could be one of its most exciting fundraisers yet.

NEWS 1130‘s very own Tim James will be wrestling at tonight’s show challenging Ara Andonian from our sister station KiSS RADiO.
