Trudeau campaigns for Liberal candidate ahead of Surrey by-election

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Dozens of people lined up in the rain and around the corner in Surrey to see the prime minister speak. Justin Trudeau was in town, campaigning in Surrey for a Liberal candidate ahead of an upcoming by-election.

Trudeau was greeted by cheers at the campaign event supporting Gordon Hogg, a former MLA and ex-mayor of White Rock.

Trudeau told the crowd the Liberals made history in the last federal election and he’d like to see a repeat. “We made history in the last election by electing 17 British Columbia Liberal MPs for the federal Parliament and it was wonderful, but you know, records are made to be broken and I think next Monday we can break that record and make it 18.”

Trudeau said Hogg would be an extraordinary asset, not just to Surrey and White Rock, but to the Government of Canada.

The by-election is set to be held on December 11th — it’s one of four being held across the country. Advanced voting began on Friday, and will continue until Monday December 4th.

Last weekend federal Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan made an appearance in Surrey to help boost Hogg’s campaign.

The New Democrat candidate will be Jonathan Silveira, a real estate agent and founder of Surrey Kids Matter, while former National Revenue Minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay is running for the Conservatives.

The vacancy was created when former Conservative MP Dianne Watts stepped down to run for the leadership of the BC Liberal Party.
