Two suspected drunk drivers, a rollover crash, a side-swiped cruiser: Abbotsford Police kept busy overnight

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – It’s a rather scary story out of Abbotsford overnight with more than a few twists and turns.

Officers were kept very busy dealing with a pair of suspected drunk drivers, a damaged cruiser, a rollover crash and three injured suspects.

It all happened around midnight near the University of the Fraser Valley, when someone called 9-1-1 about a possible drunk driver who almost hit some people walking on the side of the road.

Abbotsford Police managed to find the car.

“The white sedan took off from police. Police did not pursue this vehicle,” explains Sergeat Judy Bird.

“But officers were in the area. Approximately half an hour later, there was a report of an accident in the area… where a vehicle had gone down an embankment and crashed into a berm area.”

It was the same car and it was empty.

“A canine search was started. The canine located three people in a blackberry bush type area,” adds Bird.

The three were arrested and sent to the hospital. But while police were doing all this, Bird says “One of our police officer’s cruisers was struck by an impaired driver, who was later pulled over and a driving prohibition was issued to them and their vehicle was towed.”

Bird says stories like this one just can’t be made up. “It does come across as almost a commercial for impaired driving.”

“Be responsible. We have a lot of people out on our streets this time of year… keep an eye out for our pedestrians. And if you’re going to have something to drink, find a safe ride home with Operation Red Nose, taxis, or a designated driver.”

She’s adding a safety note for pedestrians:

“Make sure that they’re wearing reflective clothing and if they see or encounter any vehicle that are driving dangerously to please give us a call.”
