MOUNT SEYMOUR (NEWS 1130) – Crews have spent Tuesday afternoon rescuing a backcountry skier who was caught in an avalanche in Mount Seymour Provincial Park.
Poor weather conditions meant a helicopter rescue wasn’t possible and about 25 North Shore Rescue members, a medical team and Mount Seymour patrol members were required for a rope rescue close to the Seymour Alpine trail on the south-east side of First Pump peak.
Mike Danks with NSR says the avalanche swept the man off his feet before 1 p.m. “Basically he travelled with that avalanche for up to 200 metres. So we would call that quite significant.”
“He was not buried, we got a call from a friend of the subject saying it had occurred.”
The man, in his thirties, is believed to have hit a tree on his way down. He has a broken leg and rib injuries.
Avalanche Canada’s danger rating is currently “considerable” meaning avalanches are likely.
“We don’t know the cause of the avalanche at this time,” adds Danks.
