Vigil ahead of the North Korea summit calls for the inclusion of women at the table

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A candlelight vigil has been held at Jack Poole Plaza just hours ahead of a meeting on North Korea.

It was organized by a coalition of women who want a peaceful resolution to the Korean conflict.

The group of 16 women represents feminist peace movements from around the world.

Dozens of people came out, some with signs that said “peace is the only solution for Korea” and “USA and Canada Hands off North Korea.”

One of the organizers, Lynn Adamson, says while they have meetings set with some of the foreign ministers in attendance, they want a seat at the table.

“Peace agreements are more likely to come about after peace talks if women are engaged and they are more likely to last as well.”

Adamson’s claims are backed up by statistics from UN Women.

“We are asking that there be a de-escalation of this crisis in Korea, that we set a path towards peace and to a full peace accord because there never was a peace accord.”

Another one of the women was Ann Wright, a retired US army colonel, and former US diplomat.

“I tell to my Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, in there ‘that we want words. We want dialogue. We do not want war.'”

The one-day summit has received some criticism in the past few weeks because neither China or Russia will be attending.
