Fire breaks out in YVR parking lot

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A plume of black smoke could be seen coming from Vancouver International Airport area this afternoon.

Flames broke out just before 1 p.m. on the top floor of the parking garage, and fire crews say three cars were involved.

“There are no injuries and a fire investigator will attend to determine the cause,” Fire Chief Tim Wilkinson says.

The flames are under control now but the incident did attract a lot of attention on social media.

Pictures show thick smoke rising above the parkade, and had listeners calling into our newsroom to describe what they were seeing.

“There’s several fire engines here right now along with police services,” Peter, who was in the area, tells NEWS 1130. “It’s probably, I’m guessing 1,000 feet or less from where the tower is… A lot of smoke, a lot of commotion and a lot of slow downs here.”

Looking south across the river, Harry says the smoke was very dark. “Fire trucks got there probably after four or five minutes of it still burning. I could hear them and see them across the water.”

There is no impact to flight operations at Vancouver International Airport. People are able to access the parking lot, but you may want to avoid the area surrounding the cars affected on the top deck of the lot.
