More predictions for a delayed spring

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you like skiing or snowboarding, have we got a spring forecast for you! If you like warm weather… we’ll get back to you later. Much later.

The cooler-than-normal temperatures we’ve been experiencing on the Lower Mainland may be a sign of things to come next season, according to The Weather Network’s Spring Forecast, which has just been released for the months of March, April and May.

“While dramatic swings in weather are a normal part of the season, this spring looks to have a particularly volatile mood,” says Chris Scott, Chief Meteorologist with The Weather Network. “Weather during the early part of spring will leave many Canadians questioning the calendar as winter will maintain a strong grip on much of the country. Spring will not be denied, but consistently milder weather will be later to arrive than many people would probably like.”

The network’s forecast calls for a colder-than-normal first half to the season and normal amounts of precipitation which — if you’re looking at bright sides — would mean an extended ski season on the local hills and the possibility of a later start to the wildfire season.

However, there are predictions for a transition to a warmer and drier than normal pattern late in the spring with a warm and dry summer expected.

NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate has been hinting at cooler than normal weather locally since before Groundhog Day.

“We haven’t changed our thinking at all in that winter will linger this year with projections for colder-than-normal conditions through March and spring expected to be somewhat delayed,” he says. “So you might want to pump the breaks on any plans to get digging in the garden ahead of schedule.”

In the short term, Lacate is calling for a mix of sun and cloud in Metro Vancouver today with a slight chance of showers or hail in the Fraser Valley. A few showers are expected overnight with flurries over higher terrain and inland.
