SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A thick cloud of smoke filled the sky over the Surrey-Delta boundary, after a home went up in flames just east of Scott Road near 84th Avenue.
There’s no word on what caused the second-alarm fire, but one person was taken to hospital to be treated. “There was one occupant who was injured and went to hospital with smoke inhalation,” explains Assistant Chief Chris Keon with the Surrey Fire Department, “The fire’s now struck, and the fire will be investigated in the morning.”
Keon says crews are still on scene to deal with hot spots.
Callers began phoning our newsroom around 5 p.m. to report seeing thick, dark smoke spreading throughout the area.
Darren Grieve was in the area with the NEWS 1130 AirPatrol when the flames broke out. “We flew over from North Vancouver and we could see the smoke here.”
He says the smoke did catch his attention at first. “But when you get a little bit closer you can see out of the back end of the house, toward the back yard, a lot of flames shooting out of the back end of that house right now. I don’t know what was happening before we got here, but that’s what we saw when we did get here.”
