Horgan insists he has a mandate to oppose the Trans Mountain expansion

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – John Horgan runs a minority government and some polls actually indicate there’s a little more support than opposition among British Columbians for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

So does he believe he has a mandate to oppose the project? NEWS 1130 put that question to the premier today.

Although Horgan was unable to win the popular vote alone in last year’s election, he insists the clear positions on this project he outlined during the campaign and support from the Greens give him a mandate to oppose the project.

“I would also argue that the premier of British Columbia has an obligation at all times to stand up for the jurisdictional authority or provincial rights,”he says. “I’ve had conversations with other premiers across the country about that. They agree on the principles that we’re asserting here.”

He also reiterates his confidence that the courts will side with BC in saying that the province offers too much risk and not enough return for the province.

Horgan and his Alberta counterpart, Rachel Notley, will meet with the prime minister this Sunday in Ottawa, where Trudeau hopes to hash out a solution to the pipeline dispute. The feds and Alberta want to see the pipeline built, despite opposition from BC.
