Dozens gather to discuss public safety in Delta, following sexual assault

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – The City of Delta is taking steps to try to make the community feel safe, after a woman was sexually assaulted at Sunbury Park last month.

A public safety meeting saw people voicing their concerns and offering suggestions to the city and police.

Suggestions from the public included putting in more lighting in parks and other areas, as well as reducing the amount of brush to make sightlines cleaner or increasing patrols.

Ken Koontz, director of parks and recreation with the City of Delta, says they’ve already started making moves in some of those areas. “We started on May 7th to open up the view lines. We’ll continue to tackle away. Within the next couple of weeks, you should see most of it done.”

“Lighting, I have to say, would take longer,” he admits. “We have to investigate that.”

“We need to continue to work with our partners with the city,” says Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord. “Obviously, there’s a big component here for engineering and lighting, and a big component here for parks and recreation and the underbrush, and crime prevention through environmental design.

Koontz adds the city already had a brush-clearing program, but will now put a greater focus on Sunbury Park.

As for the investigation, no arrest has been made in the case, but police have released a composite sketch of the suspect in the hopes of generating more tips in the case.

“We will continue to do everything we can and pour all the resources we can into the investigative techniques to see if we can find the suspect,” says Dubord.
