Mission teen waiting to hear from school after claiming she was banned from prom

MISSION (NEWS 1130) – A local mother who claims her daughter is being barred from attending prom says she still hasn’t heard from the school district and the event is tonight.

We first told you about Trissanna Hunter, a Grade 11 student at Ecole Mission Senior Secondary, earlier this month. She suffers from chronic pain due to the genetic disorder Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which means she attends several doctors and physiotherapy appointments weekly and that results in her missing quite a bit of school.

“We haven’t heard anything. Everybody is just keeping quiet now. I ran into her principal [on Friday] at school and she just looked the other way. She didn’t even acknowledge me at all,” says Sara Hunter, Trissanna’s mother.

Hunter says Trissanna’s boyfriend, who is in Grade 12, had already purchased two tickets for the event.

“He’s allowed to bring a guest and his parents and me had to sign a waiver to let her go and that’s when it all came out that she can’t go because she has missed too many classes because she’s been too sick and her disability.”

Hunter says the school has told her Trissanna will be able to attend her prom next year, but her mother says she won’t be attending the school, instead she’ll be enrolling in culinary institution.

The 16-year-old is accusing school administrators of violating her human rights because of her disability.

Mission School District (SD 75) said in a statement, “There have been no further developments in this issue. As has been noted previously, there are many opportunities and considerable flexibility in how these situations can be resolved.”
