Local teen vies for title of ‘best brain’ in Canada

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A local teen has a shot at being crowned the “best brain” in Canada this weekend.

Cameron Lee, a high school student from Coquitlam, is competing at the “Canadian National Brain Bee” championship in Hamilton today.

The Pinetree Secondary Senior is up against 14 other regional winners from across the country, who are being tested on their knowledge of the human brain, neuro-anatomy and patient diagnosis.

That, he admits, won’t be easy.

“Because I’ve never actually seen a real live brain before and that part will definitely be the hardest for me,” the grade 12 student says.

Lee says getting ready for the competition posed quite the learning curve.

“It was difficult retaining the information, just solely based on reading it at first,” he tells NEWS 1130. “So, what I did was I actually got visual lessons by watching crash course videos on YouTube. I must have watched about nine of them.”

Lee has the chance of winning a $1,500 cash prize as well as the privilege of representing Canada at the International Brain Bee competition in Berlin this summer.

“Where I’ll be competing against really like-minded, driven smart students from all over the world.”

But first, he’s got to get through the nationals.

“There are certain really smart kids all over the country and I know that Ontario seems to win it every year, but I’ll try to change that.”

The 2018 champion also gets an opportunity to work in a neuroscience laboratory. Second and third place winners will walk away with trophies and cash prizes as well.
