Delta mayor headed to Ottawa to talk Massey Tunnel replacement funding

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – It’s still not clear when exactly we’ll find out if a bridge should be built to replace the aging Massey Tunnel.

However, while we wait for the results of an independent review — due out sometime this spring — the city of Delta will be looking for federal cash in Ottawa.

Mayor Lois Jackson is a big supporter of replacing the four lane tunnel with a 10 lane bridge. She believes something needs to be done, as soon as possible.

“It’s a problem with the movement of goods, the movement of traffic. Anyone that is in that area everyday of their life will know that the situation is getting very critical.”

Even if the review does recommend a new bridge, Jackson says the province won’t do anything.

“I don’t think we’ll really see any action, even if it does justify the previous report. I don’t think we’ll see any action for a long time,” she says. “I don’t think that we’re seeing the people’s needs reflected in the governmental wing in British Columbia.”

Preparation work on a 10-lane-replacement bridge was halted back in September by the BC NDP.

Jackson says something needs to be done about the congestion during rush hour.

“It’s not just commuters, it’s not just tourists, it’s not just BC traffic, ferry traffic. It’s everyone.”

She adds visiting Ottawa to discuss Delta related concerns is nothing new, explaining a delegation typically heads to the capital about once a year.

The Massey Tunnel first opened 59 years ago.
