Artwork at Main St Stn will be good for community: TransLink

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – TransLink is responding to criticism over plans to install artwork worth more than $165,000 at the Main Street SkyTrain station.

Jiana Ling with TransLink says it’s all part of making you welcome. “It’s just like any part of building finishes. You need to paint the walls, you need to have the light fixtures, and art is part of it. It is there to create a different kind of community.”

She cites the Canada Line’s Waterfront Station as an example of where artwork has made a difference. “You know, without those pictures, it’s really just a wide corridor. But with art on the wall, it makes it much more vibrant.”

Ling understands why some people may not be impressed with the plans, but says “this is a $33-million upgrade to improve the station, and along with that, this artwork is only costing a fraction of the price.”

“The benefits of having artwork there will definitely pay for itself; the fact that it’s creating a sense of community, I believe that is worth it,” she tells us, though she admits some people may think its needless.

Ling also says the contract has already been signed off on, so there’s no going back.
