Crews battle large fire on Mitchell Island at the same building as a fire in January

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Dozens of firefighters were called out to a large fire at a car-recycling factory on Mitchell Island Thursday night.

Callers to our newsroom describe seeing a lot of smoke, large flames and hearing explosions just before 8 p.m.

“It appears to be a large fire, we’re calling in additional resources from home,” says Deputy Chief Tim Wilkinson with Richmond Fire. “Right now we have a second alarm, which you’ll have 24 firefighters on scene, and we’re calling another eight from home.”

There’s no word on what may have caused this fire. Wilkinson says it is in a relatively isolated area.

“People don’t generally go down there unless they have business in the area. Those who have business in the area will probably be hampered by the traffic because we will have the roads closed.”

The fire at the same building as a fire in January. Another fire erupted on Mitchell Island at a mattress recycling site in June.
